Psalm 55

Noah sent forth a dove from the ark to determine if the life-threatening floodwaters had subsided (Genesis 8: 9-12) The dove returned with an olive branch in its beak, which would become an enduring symbol of peace. Here the endangered Psalmist daydreams, “Had I wings like a dove.” In this case, the source of terror is an intimate friend. Such a betrayal shakes the Psalmist to his core. The Psalm has a dreamlike, non-linear quality in its descriptions of longed for escape from and punishment of the enemy. The image of the dove, Rabbi Richard Levy states, is figurative for all of us: May we be blessed with wings to gain perspective on our gains and pains, a perspective that enables shelter in the storm.
